OF SCOUNDRELS AND STIMULUS

It is little wonder that nearly every politician embraces a stimulus plan of some sort. Stimulus plans have positive short term effects that coincide nicely with the shortsighted aims of politicians. Unfortunately, both entities have been proven to inflict significant damage to our nation.

Stimulus plans have plenty of friends, but history is not among them. The Great Depression provides our best example of this. FDR launched massive spending programs, many to create jobs. Yet, unemployment did not significantly change between 1929 and 1939. All that changed was the ratio of private to public employment. Most economists have now come to concede that FDR's actions needlessly prolonged the Depression by as much as 7 years. (See the evidence: Exhibit A, Exhibit B, Exhibit C,)

However, the damage done by stimulus plans pales in comparison to that done by politicians. It is politicians---legislative, executive and judicial---who have relentlessly eroded the limited government provisions of the Constitution, thereby transferring power from individuals to an increasingly tyrannical central government.

Our Founding Fathers clearly understood the dynamics of power. As a result, they crafted a governing document that strictly constrained federal powers. They purposely left out the authority for a federal income tax as a further restraint on the natural tendency of politicians to become power brokers.

Sadly, politicians have had more than 200 years to nibble away their Constitution restraints, and that is exactly what they have done. The result is that roughly 40 percent of our earnings are seized to service a bloated government, addicted to spending, printing money around the clock and suffocating in debt. (Listen to what Harry Browne says about big government)

The unbridled growth of government, the destruction of individual liberty, interference with free market dynamics, degradation of our money and general fiscal malfeasance are each the direct result of politicians whose vision does not extend beyond the next election cycle.

America is now more than $10 trillion in debt. Moreover, we have a house of cards called Social Security that is currently calibrated to crush the taxpayers of the next generation (Walter E Williams explains this ponzy scheme). For the crimes these shortsighted politicians have inflicted, and continue to inflict, against the coming generations of Americans, they should be frog-marched before tribunals.

Only a knowledgeable public can save us from eventual enslavement by these predatory scoundrels. If America is to be saved, it will be because a new generation of Thomas Jeffersons and James Madisons emerge to reclaim our heritage of liberty, replacing the Benedict Arnolds and Bernie Madoffs currently calling the shots.
